Kingston - The capital and largest city in Jamaica is the financial center as well as the center of government. It is inhabited by nearly 800,000 people and is a challenge to navigate around town. It is generally not recognized as a tourist destination as is Montego Bay, Negril, and Ocho Rios. So if you are planning fun and beaches go to the three "hot spots" and if you are on business - go to Kingston.
Port Royal and Spanish Town are important historical sites. It is advised that you stay at only the best hotels and resorts because of security concerns and heads up when venturing out into the city proper. The nearest airport is Norman Manley International Airport.
Montego Bay - The first of Jamaica's great resort towns, Mo Bay is also the easiest to reach because it has an international airport at Donald Sangster International. Mo Bay is the most cosmopolitan town in Jamaica but most of the night life still occurs in the various hotel resorts. Famous Doctor's Cave Beach is the great attraction here as one of the
Caribbean's best known beaches. Located on the Northwest coast of Jamaica, Montego Bay is still the resort king.
Negril - Seven Mile Beach is where it's happening in Negril. Seven miles of white sand and the best snorkeling and scuba diving in Jamaica. Since the early 1990's, Negril has been the place to be seen and we mean "seen" as several resorts sport clothing optional beaches. This is essentially an adult area of Jamaica so take your kids to Montego Bay or the Cayman Islands. Negril is located 50 miles southwest of the Montego Bay international airport - Donald Sangster International. Transfers by bus start at $20 or you can fly from Montego Bay for $60. Of course, if you are on an all-inclusive junket, then the resort will pick you up and return you to the airport as part of the package.
Ocho Rios - Located on the north coast, Ocho Rios is the major destination in this area. Most cruise ships visit here because of the popularity of Dunn's River Falls. It is a one and a half hour drive east from Donald Sangster International at Montego Bay. This
destination can also be reached by air through Air Jamaica's Air Express. An all-inclusive package comes in handy here with the transfers already taken care of.
Port Antonio - Located on the north coast, east of Ocho Rios, Port Antonio is a jewel even if it's best days are past. Some cruise ships stop here and tender their passengers ashore. It is very much a tropical hideaway with some of the best beaches and deep-sea fishing in Jamaica. This
destination can be reached by air through Air Jamaica's Air Express.
Runaway Bay - This is another quiet hideaway. Just 45 miles east of Montego and west of Ocho Rios.
It is a favorite for those who wish quieter times and superior sandy beaches. Try this up and coming location.
